New Theater to Move into Theatre in the Square Location?

The former board chair at Theatre in the Square is looking to start a new theater in the same location. Co-founder of Theatre in the Square Palmer Wells says it appears groundwork for the new theater has been going on for some time.

Mike Russell, former Board Chair of Theatre in the Square, has asked Marietta City Council for $50,000 to help open the Trackside Theatre Company at the recently closed theater's location, according to the Marietta Daily Journal.  Theatre in the Square closed its curtains in March due to a lack of funding. “It is not feasible for us to finish our current season or launch a 31st season. We simply do not have the money," Russell said at the time. The requested funds for the new theater company would come from Marietta's auto rental tax; however, Mayor Steve Tumlin told the MDJ he has reservations about the new theater operating successfully since it would be run mainly by the same individuals, the MDJ reports. Theatre in the Square's Board …

Atlanta Lyric Theatre Seeks Financial Support

The Atlanta Lyric Theatre moved to the Strand Theatre in Marietta in 2008. Ticket sales pay for less than half of the theater's expenses.

The Atlanta Lyric Theatre, which has made its home at the Strand Theatre since December 2008, is seeking additional financial support. Artistic Director and General Manager Brandt Blocker issued an appeal for support, referencing the recent closing of Theatre in the Square after 30 years of productions. "We need financial support from our audience to avoid a similar fate," Brandt said in an email. "In order to produce full-scale, professional musical theatre, we rely on the generous donations of individuals, corporations and foundations." While ticket sales for the Atlanta Lyric's productions have been strong and are continuing to improve, revenue from ticket sales pays for less than half of the theater's expenses, and revenue from grants …

Tumlin Urges Support of Arts

In his State of the City address Thursday, Mayor Steve Tumlin talked Marietta arts and museums, parks, taxes and more.

Downtown Marietta museums and theaters have been a hot topic lately, with the closing of Theatre in the Square due to a lack of funding. On Thursday during his annual State of the City speech, Mayor Steve Tumlin stressed the importance of Marietta and its citizens supporting downtown museums, theaters and cultural groups, the Marietta Daily Journal reports. Revenues from property taxes, business licenses and permits are down about 12 percent, Tumlin noted Thursday, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and MDJ. However, Tumlin said the city does not expect to raise taxes or cut services. Instead, the city plans to stay within budget by tightening spending with measures such as a hiring freeze for three years and starting an in-…
