Marietta City Schools (MCS) will hold Choice Academies random drawings Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 5 p.m. at the Central Administrative Offices located at 250 Howard Street in Marietta. The random drawings determine student placement for available West Side Elementary kindergarten seats, and wait lists for West Side kindergarten, second and fifth grade and A.L. The Georgia Department of Education named West Side Elementary a Highest-Performing School and Sawyer Road Elementary a High-Progress School. “These schools are shining examples of what we can achieve in public education in Georgia,” said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge. “I want to take what’s working at our Reward Schools and replicate that in every school in the state. This is the second time in the last five years that a Marietta City Schools educator has been honored with the Georgia Department of Education Exemplary/Exceptional Library Media Program recognition.
West Side Elementary School and Library Media Specialist Sherri Kenworthy are recipients of the 2012 Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) Exceptional Library Media Program honor. The GaDOE recently selected four exemplary and five exceptional Library Media Programs, and named nine Library Media Specialists statewide for recognition. “This program provides West Side Elementary and our Library Media Specialist with an opportunity to describe how the Library Media Program at our school is meeting school improvement goals and increasing student achievement,” said West Side principal Karen Smits. “In addition, it recognizes Sherri Kenworthy for encouraging reading for learning, reading for pleasure and reading for life.” School library media…

Alphabet Hoops is focused on introducing kids to the joys and benefits of hula hooping. Lorene Shaw, the face behind Alphabet Hoops, was so moved by hoop dance and her friend Laura Roinstad, of Baila Hoops, that with the help of some videos, she started making her own hoops and sharing them. Shaw is now a hoop dance instructor. To increase the number of kids that Shaw reaches, she wants to introduce hula hooping to adults who work with kids. Shaw is attempting to donate two adult-sized hula hoops to the P.E. department of each of the Marietta City Schools. On Jan. 23, Shaw donated hoops to A.L. Burruss Elementary. Four Marietta City Schools students are among the top finishers in the 2011-2012 Georgia PTA annual Reflections cultural arts program. The Georgia PTA’s annual Reflections program offers students in preschool through grade 12 the opportunity to create works of art in the areas of literature, photography, film/video production, musical composition, visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage), and dance choreography. The Marietta School Foundation Gala at the Strand Theatre featured performances by students and celebrated the schools and award recipients.
Students, faculty, family and friends, and community leaders were present at the Marietta Schools Foundation Awards Gala Thursday at the Strand Theatre. Performances included: Scholarships were presented to the following Marietta High School students: Admiral Jim Ellis received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. After graduating high school, Ellis attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. Ellis completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech in 1970. He also earned a master’s degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida while in flight training in Pensacola. He was in the Navy …

Eleven Marietta City Schools students were named system winners of the 2011-2012 Young Georgia Authors Competition. “Congratulations to all the students competing in this year’s writing contest. Their entries were well-written, organized, and enjoyable to read,” said Dr. Debra McCracken, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, in a press release. Marietta City Schools elementary grade students will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the fifteenth annual National Education Association's Read Across America Day, March 2. Cobb County schools were recognized under Georgia's Single Statewide Accountability System, developed by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, to award schools based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress status. Due West Elementary School was awarded the Highest Performing Gold award, and Lost Mountain Middle School was awarded the Highest Performing Bronze award. Forty-one Cobb schools and 370 Georgia public schools were recognized for improvement and achievement during the 2010-2011 school year, according to Gov. Nathan Deal.
