A group of Cobb County government officials got to experience what it's like to be a firefighter. Cobb District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott, Cobb Public Safety Director Jack Forsythe and 911 Director Ann Flynn took part in firefighter training exercises last week at the Public Safety Training Center in Marietta. The experience included a ladder climb as well as interior smoke and fire simulations. The department covers 305 square miles of the unincorporated areas of Cobb as well as three incorporated cities, including Kennesaw, Acworth and Powder Springs. Cobb Gets AAA Rating

The county is in strong financial standing, Chairman Tim Lee said.

In a time when Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said governments are close to filing for bankruptcy, Cobb County is thriving. The county, which recieved on unqualified or clean opinion on its Comprehensive Annual Plan audit, has the lowest millage rate in the metro Atlanta area, added 3 percent to the general fund reserve and 5 percent to its fire district fund reserve.  And, in most areas, the county's revenues for fiscal year 2012 not only exceeded expenditures but also exceeded what county officials originally had budgeted. For example, in the General Fund, revenues came in at $327.5 million, up from the $325.8 million originally budgeted. And, expenditures came in at $313.3 million, $17.3 million less than what county officials …

Police, Commissioners Discuss Pawn Shop Tech

The potential changes to the Code of Cobb County would mandate security measures to fight the pawning of stolen goods, but the issue of fees for the service is proving a stumbling block.

With the recent increase in property crimes in the Northeast Cobb area, the Cobb County Police Department and the Cobb Board of Commissioners are looking for ways to recover stolen property and catch those pawning stolen items. The Police Department has suggested the amendment of Chapter 78 of the Code of Cobb County. The additions would include provisions for Cobb County pawn shops to be equipped with electronic fingerprint readers. Additionally, pawn shop attendants would be required to photograph each client and the items being pawned. "If we have the system, more property will be recovered and people who trade in stolen goods may move to other ventures," said Cobb Police Chief John Houser. "In areas where this program has been started…

Community Leaders Arrested in the Wild West

Arrests, fast-draw demonstrations, old-time cooking, pony rides and other activities brought the Wild West alive at Jim Miller Park on Saturday.

The second annual Wild West Fest at Jim R. Miller Park on Saturday showcased cowboys and cowgirls, gunslingers, fast-draw demonstrations by RedDoc Entertainment and lasso lessons. There were around one thousand people in attendance for the Wild West Fest, and the event is expected to raise between $17,000 and $19,000. As part of the event, local celebrities agreed to be "arrested" and "raise bail" for the libraries. Mike Boyce, Tony Britton, Sheila Jones, Mark Mathews, Bob Ott, RJ Patel, Van Pearlberg, Woody Thompson and Bob Weatherfor were named this year's “bad guys” and put in jail at the event on Saturday. They will continue to raise funds over the next couple of weeks, Mary Ellen Leffard, of the Cobb Library Foundation, said. …

On the Agenda

Code Changes Could Increase Redevelopment

It is the hoped that the changes will increase redevelopment that doesn't cost the county a dime.

The Cobb County commissioners have before them Tuesday a proposal that could help redevelopment efforts in the county. The Cobb County Development Standards code has been written through the years for new development, said Commissioner Bob Ott. He explained at last week's District 2 Town Hall Meeting that these measures were originally intended to protect undeveloped land and that when the code was being written officials hadn’t considered redevelopment. Over time he said it became more expensive for developers to redevelop an old site than it would be to construct a new one. “So what happens is that’s really why you see a lot of green field development and we’re leaving this trail behind us of worn down, worn out shopping centers and …

Opposition Grows Over Cobb EDGE Plan

Commissioner JoAnn Birrell is wary of county funding for the Cobb Chamber's economic development plan.

Should Cobb taxpayer money be used to help spur economic development in the county? That's a bet Cobb commission chairman Tim Lee is hedging as he pledged last week to help fund a major initiative by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.  But commissioner JoAnn Birrell spoke out against the proposal, according to a report in The Marietta Daily Journal on Friday, saying the county should not commit to funding that it cannot control. The Chamber initiative, called Competitive EDGE (Economic Development for a Growing Economy), would come with a still-to-be-determined contribution from Cobb government. The plan was devised by Market Street, an Atlanta consulting firm. Described as a "game-changing" project, EDGE (Facebook page) would be "Cobb County’s…
