For the second time in as many days, the four Republicans running for Cobb Commission Chairman sounded off on what appears to be the most pressing issues during their two-month primary campaign—property tax increases and the upcoming TSPLOST regional transportation referendum. In a Wednesday forum at the East Cobb Library sponsored by the East Cobb Civic Association, the three challengers to incumbent Tim Lee all took aim at his vote last year to raise the county millage rate. They also questioned his general support for the TSPLOST referendum, which is included on the July 31 primary ballot. Former chairman Bill Byrne, Mike Boyce and Larry Savage, who ran against Lee in 2010 in the Republican race to succeed Sam Olens, all said the …

Should Cobb taxpayer money be used to help spur economic development in the county? That's a bet Cobb commission chairman Tim Lee is hedging as he pledged last week to help fund a major initiative by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. But commissioner JoAnn Birrell spoke out against the proposal, according to a report in The Marietta Daily Journal on Friday, saying the county should not commit to funding that it cannot control. The Chamber initiative, called Competitive EDGE (Economic Development for a Growing Economy), would come with a still-to-be-determined contribution from Cobb government. The plan was devised by Market Street, an Atlanta consulting firm. Described as a "game-changing" project, EDGE (Facebook page) would be "Cobb County’s…

His State of the County address says the tough decisions of 2011 have Cobb in a good place on 2012.
Tim Lee acted like a man seeking four more years as Cobb County’s top elected official when he delivered his State of the County address Monday morning. The chairman of the Cobb Board of Commissioners led a crowd of nearly 400 business and political leaders through the county’s economic struggles and successes of the past year and celebrated where the county sits now. “Cobb County is ready for anything 2012 may throw at it,” Lee said, because the board under his leadership did what was necessary in 2011. That includes being ready for job growth, something Lee touted Monday when he announced that Fresenius Medical Care will expand in Cobb by bringing 120 jobs to Kennesaw. Fresenius Medical Care has clinics in Austell, Smyrna and Marietta. “…
