Population Down, Crime Up

While Marietta's population decreased between 2009 and 2010, the number of violent crimes and property crimes increased.

Marietta's population decreased to 65,318 in 2010 from 68,037 in 2009; however, the number of violent crimes reported increased to 462 in 2010 from 433 in 2009, according to FBI Uniform Crime Reports. Violent crimes include murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Similarly, property crime increased to 2,857 in 2010 from 2,530 in 2009. Property crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. The 2010 results reflect a continued increase in crime rates over the last five years. In 2005, there were 331 violent crimes reported and 2,371 property crimes reported. The number of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters reported decreased to 2 in 2010 from 6 in 2005.
