Held on Marietta Square, the First Friday Art Walk kicks off in April and takes visitors on a self-guided tour of Marietta's art scene.
Held the first Friday of the month, April through October, the First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour to Marietta’s diverse art scene. Art galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants and boutiques on Marietta Square host artists within their stores and are open from 5 to 9 p.m. There will also be performance artists based throughout the Square. New this year is Tavern in the Garten, a beer and wine garden where you can enjoy beverages, music and sponsor vendors. Tavern in the Garten will run from May through October. 2013 dates are: April 5, May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6 and October 4. Marietta artist Helen Rule will showcase her chainmaille jewelry at 2 Rules Fine Art on Marietta Square in February.
2 Rules Fine Art presents its show “All that Glitters,” featuring the chainmaille jewelry of Helen Rule. The gallery will have special pricing of Rule’s jewelry during the entire exhibit. Helen Rule has been making chainmaille in both the form of jewelry and armor for 12 years. Rule was inspired to start working with chainmaille as a result of her archaeological studies at Johns Hopkins University, where she received an Anthropology B.A. in 2004. Rule’s jewelry designs use a variety of metals, including silver, gold, bronze, brass, copper, titanium and niobium. In addition, many of her pieces incorporate precious and semi-precious stones. On Oct. 5, 2 Rules Fine Art, will unveil its latest solo exhibition by painter, mixed media artist and photographer Michelle Scott, featuring pieces from her most recent body of work, “Kukan Series.” Much like the epic plots of 1940s cinema, Scott’s large-scale mixed media paintings in “Kukan Series” depict the peaks and valleys of heroic characters and sweeping adventures. Inspired by photographs passed down from Scott’s grandfather, filmmaker Rey Scott, the works in this series mime the harrowing episodes of his travels and subsequent 1941 Oscar-winning documentary, “Kukan,” revealing uncharted war torn China during the late 1930s and 1940s and his relationship with the film’s Chinese-American producer, Li Ling-Ai. Southern playwright Raymond Fast is gearing up for a production of two of his new plays, "Scorned" and "Touched," to open at Out of Box Theatre in Marietta, the Alley Stage of the former Theatre in the Square. Fast began writing for the stage in 2005. Since then, his plays have been produced throughout Metro Atlanta, and from the American Midwest to New York City. He grew up in Cobb County, graduating from Osborne High School in 1981. He currently lives nearby in Dallas, Georgia. Q: These plays are both very dark. Are they typical of your work?
