Marietta Burn Ban Starts Today

The ban is issued by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and affects the city of Marietta and 54 counties.

The annual statewide ban on open burning begins May 1. The ban is issued by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and affects the city of Marietta and 54 counties. During the ban period, residents cannot burn leaves, tree limbs, forestland or use air curtain destructors for land clearing. Recreational fires are allowed, Marietta Fire assistant chief Scott Tucker said. "Residents can call the department, and we will walk them through the process." The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) imposes a ban on outdoor burning to comply with federal clean air regulations. Man Charged with Arson in Sun Inn Fire

The Marietta Fire Department is currently investigating an arson that occurred at the Sun Inn located at 871 Cobb Parkway North.

The Marietta Fire Department is currently investigating an arson that occurred at the Sun Inn located at 871 Cobb Parkway North.  On April 2, at approximately 2:45 a.m., units from the Marietta Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the Sun Inn, according to a press release from Marietta Police Public Information Officer David Baldwin.  Upon arrival, fire crews observed visible flames showing from the two-story motel. Fire crews extinguished the fire, which caused approximately $50,000 in damage, according to the press release.  A number of motel residents were displaced because of the fire, but the motel management was able to provide additional rooms for those guests, according to the press release. Cobb Parkway, Roswell Street Reopened After Gas Leak

One southbound lane of Cobb Parkway and all eastbound lanes of Roswell Street from Key Drive to Cobb Parkway were shut down Monday because of a gas leak.

The gas leak was repaired shortly before 7:30 p.m. All lanes of Cobb Parkway and Roswell Street are now open. All North and Southbound lanes of Cobb Parkway at Roswell Street are open. The right-turn lane from Eastbound Roswell Street to Southbound Cobb Parkway is still closed. Marietta Fire Department and Atlanta Gas Light crews are on the scene of a gas main break at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Roswell Street. One southbound lane of Cobb Parkway is shut down as well as all eastbound lanes of Roswell Street from Key Drive to Cobb Parkway. Marietta Firefighter Funeral Tuesday

Marietta Fire Fighter Engineer Lonnie Nutt died Thursday, after collapsing during a call to an automobile accident on Whitlock Avenue. Nutt's visitation and funeral will be held at the Roswell Street Baptist Church.

Marietta Fire Fighter Engineer Lonnie Nutt, with Engine 53, died Thursday, March 7, after collapsing during a call to an automobile accident on Whitlock Avenue. Nutt is believed to have been the first Marietta firefighter to die in the line of duty, according to The Marietta Daily Journal. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church.  A procession to Kennesaw Memorial on Whitlock Avenue will follow the Tuesday service, Marietta Police Public Information Officer David Baldwin said. Marietta Firefighter Dies After Collapsing at Scene of Auto Accident

Marietta Fire Fighter Engineer Lonnie Nutt died Thursday after collapsing during a call to an automobile accident on Whitlock Avenue. Nutt began his career with the City of Marietta in May of 1994.

Marietta Fire Engineer Lonnie Nutt "succumbed to a medical issue he experienced after collapsing during a call" while providing aide to an injured motorist, according to a statement released by the Marietta Fire Department Thursday evening. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 7, the Marietta Fire Department responded to an automobile accident with a report of injuries on Whitlock Avenue, according to the statement. Fire Engineer Lonnie Nutt drove a Marietta Fire commander and firefighter on Engine 53 to the scene. When they arrived on the scene and began to assist with the injured, Fire Engineer Nutt fell to the ground with a medical issue of his own, according to the statement. Heat Advisory for Marietta

Marietta Fire and Police Departments offer signs and treatments for heat-related emergencies and precautions for a safe weekend with temperatures in the 100s.

Marietta Fire and Police Departments issued a heat advisory to all Marietta residents for the upcoming weekend. Temperatures are forecasted to be over 100 degrees for several days straight.  With this type of forecast, heat related injuries and deaths increase if proper precautions are not taken. The elderly, infirm and youth are particularly vulnerable to increased temperatures. All efforts should be made to limit their exposure to the heat and have them remain in an air-conditioned area. Heat Cramps—Painful spasms in muscles of the legs and abdomen, heavy sweating. First aid—Get out of the sun, and take small sips of water; if nausea occurs, discontinue the water.
