Smile! You're on MARTA Camera

The $17 million surveillance camera system was approved last year and first will be installed on seven buses through November.

This week, MARTA officially launched a pilot program of buses equipped with surveillance cameras that will later be expanded to its entire fleet of passenger vehicles. Seven buses on randomly chosen routes have cameras strategically positioned on the interior and exterior to record high-quality video and audio. Letter to the Editor: Bus Driver Suspension

A bus driver was stabbed in the face trying to calm a verbal altercation between passengers.

I am disappointed in the decision to suspend CCT driver Damian Haney for attempting to restore order on Route 45. As someone who is a frequent passenger on that route and the CCT system over all, I commend Haney for trying to maintain order and sanity during the ordeal that occurred on Feb. 20. For a transit system that transports nearly five million passengers yearly, I would expect the drivers to be able to be empowered to diffuse any situation that becomes a threat to the safety of other passengers and themselves. The suspect, Taniesha Nicole Twyne allegedly pulled out a knife when she attempted to keep a cellphone belonging to another passenger. This was occurring at a time where passengers were departing the bus and boarding the bus. …

Cobb Officials Push for Congestion Relief on Northwest Corridor

State and Cobb County officials want to reduce funding for transit services and put it toward the managed reversible lanes on the county’s Northwest Corridor I-75/575. What do you think?

Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee, Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews, State Senators Chip Rogers and Lindsey Tippins, and State Representative Earl Earhart want to alter the Metro Atlanta Regional Transportation Referendum project list by reducing funding for transit services and putting funding toward the managed reversible lanes on the county’s North/South interstate (also known as the Northwest Corridor I-75/575 P3 initiative). Project TIA-CO-035 calls for enhanced transit services from North Cobb County to the MARTA Arts Center Station and is the most expensive project on Cobb’s list at $689 million. It was originally the leading project in Cobb’s effort to combat growing traffic congestion along I-75 and I-575. “When Cobb County went out …
