Osborne Girls Knocked Out of Region Playoffs

The Lady Cardinals' loss to unbeaten Douglas County ends their season one win short of the state playoffs.

The unstoppable train known as the Douglas County Lady Tigers rolled into the quarterfinals of the Region 5-AAAA playoffs Tuesday and ended Osborne's season on the way with an 83-36 win. During the season the Lady Cardinals lost to Douglas County by 10 points, the closest any region opponent came to beating the Lady Tigers, so there was reason to hope for a close game. Douglas County went into Tuesday’s game on their own court unbeaten and ranked fourth in the GACA coaches poll. Osborne beat Hiram on Friday to earn the right to play the No. 1 seed with a state playoff berth on the line. Osborne started the game with emotions running high and played with an enthusiasm that Douglas County has a habit of crushing. The Lady Cardinals, led …

Osborne Bounced From 5-AAAA Tournament

Houston Cabbell had 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Osborne on Saturday.

Despite the way Saturday’s game played out, East Paulding head coach Jermal McCoy insists that his team is not a one-man band. Guard Christian Browden carried the team offensively, displaying a hot hand from everywhere on the court and finishing with 30 points in the Raiders’ 69-59 win over Osborne in the Region 5-AAAA tournament. Not that McCoy was complaining. “His play was huge for us because if you look at our stats, we have about six kids that average about the same amount of points for us,” McCoy said. “But he’s been the most consistent for us and he played very well tonight.” McCoy attributes Browden’s offensive explosion to his team’s ability to secure the ball and execute its offense. “The biggest thing that we did better tonight …

Coaches Dissatisfied with Osborne Wins

Cardinal teams dominate South Paulding varsity basketball, but head coaches want better performances.

Osborne High School’s basketball teams easily prevailed over visiting South Paulding Friday, but neither head varsity coach was particularly impressed with their level of play. The girls dominated the Lady Spartans, who came to Osborne with a 3-11 season record and were 0-6 in the region, leading by substantial margins after every period and pulling ahead to a 58-37 win. The boys trailed 11-10 at the end of the first period but stymied Spartan scoring in the second and third periods to post a 55-45 victory. All the Lady Cardinal scoring in the first period was from behind the 3-point line. Ebonee Allen, who led her team in scoring with 17 for the night, hit two, as did Destiny Ham as Osborne jumped out to a 12-3 lead by the end of the …

Osborne Sweeps Sprayberry on Road

The girls rode a 17-1 first quarter, and the boys survived in a nip-and-tuck game for the regional wins.

Osborne guard Houston Cabbell hit five 3-pointers, and forward DeVonte Thornton dominated the interior on offense as the Cardinals knocked off Sprayberry 67-64 on Tuesday at Sprayberry. The Cardinals evened their record at 6-6 and 3-2 in Region 5-AAAA, surviving a late double technical foul and a wide-open look at a 3-pointer by Sprayberry’s D.J. Funderburg that would have put the Yellow Jackets ahead. Thornton led all scorers with 25 points, to go with six rebounds, and Cabbell finished with 22. “Cabbell’s been shooting bad the last three or four games, so it’s good to see him get out of that little slump,” Osborne head coach Emmett Rouse said. “He’s a great shooter, and he went through a little slump for a little while, but I depend on …
