Marietta Man Killed Crossing Austell Rd.

As in other recent pedestrian deaths in Cobb County, Arthur Horne walked outside a crosswalk.

A Marietta man was killed Friday afternoon trying to cross Austell Road just north of Hicks Road. The death of Arthur Horne, 38, was at least the fourth time in two months that a pedestrian was killed in Cobb County while trying to cross a road outside a crosswalk. Horne walked into the path of a southbound gray 2004 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Claudia Hopkins, 22, of Austell about 6 p.m. Friday, Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said. Horne was pronounced dead at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell. Hopkins was not hurt and is not expected to be charged. Still, police ask anyone with information about the crash to call 770-499-3987. I agree it was a tragedy!! But, almost every single day I see pedestrians crossing the street in the middle of the road when the crosswalk is only 20 to 50 ft away. They even cross over, and stand in the turning lane waiting for traffic to go by. Why would you risk your life to save a few steps?? Yes maybe we do need more crosswalks, but at the same time we need the pedestrians to use them.   more ›

Pedestrian Killed Near Southern Poly

He's the third person fatally struck by a car in Cobb County in three days.

A 50-year-old man crossing South Marietta Parkway in Marietta was struck by a car and died Saturday night. He was the fourth pedestrian hit by a vehicle and the third to die in Cobb County in three days. The man was crossing the road about 10:15 p.m. outside a crosswalk at Rose Drive, by Southern Polytechnic State University, when a silver 2004 Pontiac Grand Am hit him, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Sheila Mize, 57, of Marietta was driving the car, the AJC said. Marietta police have not released the pedestrian's identity. The man died at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Another Death Crossing Austell Road

The driver is not expected to be charged in Friday night's collision south of Marietta.

A woman was killed late Friday night while crossing Austell Road south of Marietta. Wendy Nolan, 39, of Austell was struck by a red 2004 Toyota Corolla south of Floyd Road just before 10:40 p.m., Cobb County police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman reported. He said she stepped into the path of the northbound Toyota, which was driven by Jasmine Hamm, 24, of Austell. Nolan was pronounced dead at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Hamm was not hurt and is not expected to be charged, Bowman said. Police ask anyone with information on the fatal crash to call 770-499-3987.
