On the article Iowa City School District May Partner with Police Looking to Expand Armed Community Officer Presence to Schools

@Chris I'm not sure that they would have to be armed Chris. I think they would be armed if they operate in the same way as the resource officer does in the downtown, but I would think if the schools objected the two parties could work something out.
I think the main problem in this instance again is time. How do you figure out all these little details in the time before Iowa City files for the grant? You don't necessarily have to figure all of the details out since they can continue to be refined after the grant is filed, but you also need to get community input and consider a lot of details before you commit to being interested.
The district even initiated a study team of this issue back when it was considered in 2007: http://www.iowa-city.k12.ia.us/board/2007-08/12-18-07/SRO_study_process.pdf

@Joe Stutler
I'm sure one libertarian argument could be that this shows that gun control isn't necessarily the solution, but rather the elimination of the War on Drugs along with the illicit activity that follows with outlawing drugs that fuel the drug trade. But I'm guessing making currently illegal drugs legal (besides, perhaps, marijuana eventually) is even less likely than this country passing comprehensive gun control.

Reply1993 is an interesting point to start from. Wasn't that about the point of the Bloods versus Crypts at their height, the LA Riots were around there, a lot of the crack-related violent crime of the 1980s in places like Washington D.C., etc. I won't posit beyond that why gun violence has gone down or what it has to do with gun control. I thought it does show just how crazy it was back then, since gun violence is still a problem for America today.

I am skeptical they'll be able to manage all that (to the community's satisfaction) in 12 days, but we'll see.

Reply@Julie and @Maria: I hereby move that every Iowa City Police Officer be armed with a sub sandwich to be used as an emergency door stop slash mobile eating device.

@Jeff Klinzman I'll take that offer Jeff. I also probably need some brain rejuvenation tonic if you know of any good formulas.

It is a good question to ask. I saw another complaint recently that I don't believe I wrote about where a huge house party was broken up and the people inside arrested because the officer was able to get his foot into the path of the door.

Good question, I see the food in the door move quite a bit in the criminal complaints. Not sure if it's considered an intrusion if you're still at the thresh hold. Either way, you can't just go to town on anybody's foot, let alone a police officer's.

@Ditto Maxine. I hope everyone in this thread but especially the mothers are having a great day today. On the subject I really enjoyed Maria's blog about the poignant experience of watching a child move away:
