Chatt Tech Motorcycle Program Top 30 in Nation

Chattahoochee Technical College was named one of the top 30 schools in the United States for Motorcycle Service Technology. The ranking, which was compiled by BTOSports.com, lists programs that focus on the complex skills needed to effectively diagnose, repair and maintain motorcycles.

“We have a very diverse program here at Chattahoochee Technical College,” said Associate Dean of Technical Studies Shane Evans. “The students range in age from 18 to their mid-60s and come from all different backgrounds. Some are motorcycle enthusiasts who want to learn more about the equipment as a hobby and others are students looking to start a career in the industry.”

Courses in the program are taught by Chattahoochee Technical College Instructor Ben Pendley, a graduate of the college’s Automotive Technology program and former employee of Harley Davidson. Evans said Pendley’s background as a technical college student adds to the value of the program and provides him a unique perspective in working with the students.

“He understands what it’s like to be a student while balancing a job and homework,” Evans said. “And he also understands what it’s like to be working in this industry. That allows him to teach students in a way that will be valuable to their future employers.”

Housed at the Marietta Campus, the Motorcycle Service Technology program prepares students for entry-level positions as motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle technicians. The diploma level program is structured to provide in-depth technical knowledge and understanding of electrical, mechanical and fuel systems, as well as chassis and suspension. Emphasis is placed on accurate diagnosis and repair of all major systems and subsystems. The program combines classroom instruction and hands on experience, along with internship opportunities.

Most recently students from the Chattahoochee Technical College Motorcycle Service Technology program were showcased at the Skills USA State Conference and Competition. David Hamby of Dacula placed second and Michael Edwards of Acworth placed third in the state competition for the industry.

“It is an honor to be recognized,” said Pendley. “We’ve created a great program that will prepare students for a career they can enjoy for the rest of their life.”
